Since around 1997 due to a lot of car thefts, vehicles were fitted with an immobilizer system. This means that the cars security went from needing to have the correctly cut car key to start the car, to now needing not only the correct cut key to needing that same key to be programmed to the car in question.
Although some of the old keys look like a standard non immobilizer keys, a lot of them are not. Each key has an imbedded transponder chip in what locksmiths call the head of the key. This chip must store the correct data in order for the car to run.
If you have a faulty, damaged or broken car key or simply you may have a new car key that’s not yet been programmed, any of these will cause your car not to start and you may notice a solid or flashing light on your dashboard panel, this is telling you that the car key in the ignition is not authorized or programmed to start your vehicle.
